November 6, Miami Blue Chapter meeting 1 PM

November 6, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

“Schaus’ Swallowtail Butterfly Conservation on North Key Largo” given by Scott Tedford, wildlife biologist for District 5 Florida State Parks.

Join us in Key Largo for our winter meeting at Pennekamp State Park.  The spotlight will be on our Schaus’ Swallowtail surveys conducted in April, May and June with Scott Tedford, District Biologist, Bureau of Parks District 5, Florida Park Service, who will be our speaker.  Scott works with imperiled species including shorebirds, sea turtles and the Florida scrub jay on state park property from Fort Pierce to Key West.  He coordinates volunteers and compiles data for the annual Schaus’ swallowtail butterfly surveys on north Key Largo and is a member of the Interagency Butterfly Working Group steering committee.   Plans are in the works to continue the surveys in 2017. This coordinated effort with Federal, State and County staff,  the University of Florida and Miami Blue Chapter volunteers helped prevent this rare butterfly from becoming extirpated. Come learn how you can participate.

As there will be no refreshments allowed in the meeting room, have an early lunch before you come. When you enter the park, identify yourself as a Miami Blue Chapter member. There will be no entrance fee for this meeting.

We will take a short walk to the Grove after the meeting to look for Silver-banded Hairstreaks.
