Moth Day & Night

Come celebrate the fourth annual National Moth Week at Long Key Nature Center. Join participants in 49 states and 36 countries to spotlight the importance of moths and their impact on Earth’s ecosystems. All Moth Day events are free; Moth Night has a small fee.

  • 2:00 p.m. Opening Remarks by Kelli Whitney, Parks Naturalist, Long Key Nature Center
  • 2:30 p.m. Identifying the Sphinx Moths of South Florida by Ingrid Asencio, Parks Naturalist, Long Key Nature Center
  • 3:30 p.m. Door Prize Raffle, Pollinator Plant Sale, Educational and Informational Booths
  • 4:00 p.m. Sphinxes, Hawks and Horn Worms: A Tale of Sphingidae by Dr. Michelle DaCosta, Entomologist, U.S. Department of Agriculture
  • 5:00 p.m. Door Prize Raffle, Pollinator Plant Sale, Educational and Informational Booths with Refreshments provided by Whole Foods Market, Davie
  • 7:00 p.m. Workshop: Attracting Moths for a Closer Look by Kelli Whitney, Parks Naturalist, Broward County Parks and Recreation
  • 8:00 p.m. Moth Night Activities
    Long Key naturalists will set up equipment to attract moths and introduce us to what they find. This effort will contribute to our understanding of moth populations in protected areas such as Long Key — and demonstrate how lepidopterists do their work with lights, sheets, and potions that moths find irresistible. $5 per person.
