DESCRIPTION:Pot Luck Picnic \nVirginia Key Beach Park – Orange Pavillion \nMarch 5\, 3 pm to 6 pm \nSponsered by: \nTREEmendous Miami\, Dade Chapter Florida Native Plant Society\, Miami Blue Chapter\, NABA\, and Tropical Audubon Society. \nBring family\, nature loving friends and your favorite pot-luck dish. We will once again share our love of nature and tasty food after a two year hiatus from what was formally a holiday picnic in December. \n3 pm:  Maritime hammock tour led by Gary Hunt\, TREEmendous Miami’s Vice President of tree planting and leader of their restoration work on Virginia Key.  Bring binoculars to better see the wildlife.  Long pants and shoes are recommended. \n4:30 pm: Potluck Picnic.  Enjoy tasty treats\, good company and impromptu recreation (bring frisbees\, footballs\, etc.) or the wading beach. \nSee http://virginiakeybeachpark.net/parkinfo for information about park facilities. \nRSVP and bring a main dish\, side dish or dessert to share.  TREEmendous Miami will provide drinks and items from the grill.  RSVP: Patty Phares\, 305-255-6404\, pharespl@gmail.com \nDriving directions: \nTake the Richenbacker Causeway (toll by Sunpass or Toll-by-plate) to the last traffic light before the bridge to Key Biscayne. Proceed on the causeway until UM’s Rosensteel School is on the right. Turn left.  Tell the entrance booth attendant you are there for the TREEmendous picnic (do not pay entrance fee). Drive along the left side of the parking lot to the pink park office building. Bear left. The road turns to gravel and curves clockwise along the small railroad track and around the mangrove fringed lake.  Continue to the large cleared area where the orange pavilion can clearly be seen near the beach.  Park north of the pavilion. \n

SUMMARY:Pre-season Schaus' Swallowtail Butterfly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, this year the Miami Blue Chapter is assisting the Florida State Park Service by surveying Key Largo looking for the Schaus’ Swallowtail.  Join park staff and volunteers walking the serene trails of north Key Largo.  The pre-season meeting will be held on March 28 at 7 pm at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.  Scott Tedford\, who is the District Biologist for the Bureau of Parks\, Florida Park Service will introduce a special guest speaker\, Matt Standridge from the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera & Biodiversity\, University of Florida.  We’ll also go over routes\, survey methods and procedures which are important for new and returning volunteers.  Scott feels that it is important that we attend.  Scott plans to begin the surveys in April. \nIf you have not joined us in the past\, it is great fun\, great exercise and really great company with fellow nature lovers.  Contact Scott Tedford at:  Scott.Tedford@dep.state.fl.us \nThese surveys will be conducted in April\, May and June.  Come join us!
