SUMMARY:Schaus’ Swallowtail Surveys 2023
DESCRIPTION:Once again this year\, the Miami Blue Chapter will participate in surveying North Key Largo for the rare Schaus’ Swallowtail.  We will join county\, state and federal environmental staff and volunteers in search of this rare beauty.  If you are interested in joining us\, email: \nSelina Alberti\, Environmental Specialist\, Florida Park Service;  Salena.Alberti@floridadep.gov \nSurvery will begin April 15\, 2015 and will continue until mid June 2023. \nTwo Schaus’ Swallowtails were sighted in late April this year.  Come join us!!!

DESCRIPTION:Brian Rapoza of the Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) will lead this half-day trip to the largest remaining tract of coastal tropical hardwood hammock in the Florida Keys on Saturday\, May 6th\, 2023. \nMeet at 6:30am at the Cracker Barrel restaurant at US 1 and Palm Drive in Florida City (GPS: 25.449166\, -80.476029). Bring water and insect repellant. There is an entrance fee to the botanical site. Lunch at a Key Largo restaurant follows the trip. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Miami Blue Chapter of NABA will be holding their 2nd Quarterly Meeting of 2023 on Sunday\, May 7th\, 2023 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm\, and will be held at The Deering Estate. Since you will already be admitted to the grounds for the meeting\, you should take advantage of it and tour the Estate. \nOur guest speaker will be Andy Davis PhD\, whose presentation will be “Monarch butterflies in Florida – the good\, the bad and the ugly (truths).” \nBrief abstract: Andy’s presentation will summarize the latest research findings around the monarch population status\, including what is happening to the population in Florida\, and\, how anthropogenic activities are influencing the monarchs in Florida\, both positively and negatively. \nThis meeting will be in-person and also live-streamed via Zoom. SUMMARY:Broward Chapter of NABA - Annual Speaker Event
DESCRIPTION:The Broward County Butterfly Chapter (BCBC) of NABA\, will have their Annual Speaker Event on Sunday\, May 21st at the Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center in Davie\, FL. The event will start at 2:00 pm and admission is free to all.\n\nThe speaker will be Marc Minno\, and his presentation will be on the “Butterflies of Colombia.”\n\nBiography: Marc Minno has studied ecology\, systematics and biogeography of butterflies and moths. He has a B.S. degree in entomology from Purdue University in Entomology\, M.S. degree in entomology from the University of California at Davis\, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Florida. Marc has been working toward conserving the state’s rare\, unique\, and imperiled plants and animals. Recently\, he has been monitoring imperiled butterflies in the Florida Keys and South Florida.
