SUMMARY:Special Butterfly Survey of Matheson Hammock West
DESCRIPTION:Come join the Miami Blue Chapter of NABA members and butterfly enthusiasts alike on a 2 hour survey of Matheson Hammock West on Saturday August 5th\, from 10:00 am to Noon. \nThis is an effort to establish a baseline for the butterflies that are present\, now that the initial phase of the restoration project has been accomplished to the area. \nThis short survey is open to any and all\, but please Dennis Olle at dolle@me.com to confirm your attendance. \nThe meeting point will be in the parking lot to the West Matheson Hammock Park\, which is on the West side of Old Cutler Road\, directly opposite the main entrance to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens.

DESCRIPTION:The Miami Blue Chapter of NABA will be holding their 3rd Quarterly Meeting of 2023 on Sunday\, August 6th\, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm\, and will be held at The Deering Estate. A social gathering begins at 12:30 pm\, and the program and zoom meeting begins at 1:00 pm. \nOur guest speaker will be Roger L. Hammer\, whose presentation will be “Pine Rocklands – A Globally Imperiled Plant Community” \nBrief abstract: Pine Rocklands once covered the Miami Rock Ridge but development and agriculture have reduced the original 185\,000 acres in southern Miami-Dade County to less than 2% of its original coverage. This program focuses on the plants that make up this important plant community\, and the wildlife they support. \nRoger will also have his books available for purchase (cash or check only). \nThis meeting will be in-person and also live-streamed via Zoom.
