Meet the Miami tiger beetle, the 15,000th species in Nat Geo’s Photo Ark

The Miami tiger beetle was rediscovered in 2007 after a more than 60-year absence. Now, planned development is threatening its existence.

Miami tiger beetles are named for their “highly voracious predatory behaviors,” says one insect expert. Less than 10 millimeters long, they move fast and ambush their prey—ants, smaller beetles, and other insects.
