BUTTERFLY GARDEN: County commissioners just approved a resolution directing Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s administration to determine the feasibility of partnering with Florida Power and Light (FPL) and the Miami Blue Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association to establish a butterfly garden. The mayor is to report within 120 days, including a campaign to educate residents on the importance of butterfly habitat. FPL owns a site in the southwest area of the county close to The Crossings that could be used for those purposes. “According to butterfly conservationists, areas filled with butterflies, moths, and other invertebrates benefit from pollination and natural pest control, and butterflies and moths are also an important part of the food chain by providing food for birds, bats, and other animals,” says the resolution by Raquel Regalado approved at the Feb. 1 commission meeting.
