Help the Florida Bonneted Bat
After years of delay, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has at last proposed to designate 1.5 million acres of critical habitat for endangered Florida bonneted bats. These delightfully big-eared bats can be seen darting through the night skies of central and southern Florida in search of bugs.
The proposed designation is a good first draft of lands that should be protected, but there’s more work to be done. The Service needs to expand the proposal to provide buffers against sea-level rise, climate change and sprawl. And it must protect the areas surrounding bats’ roosts.
By protecting their habitat, we also protect butterfly and moth habitat.
